I had been looking forward to Britney Spears VMA performance for a few weeks. After a long break, this was going to be essentially the official debut of her come back career, and I wanted to be there! Here is my review.
The song was great, the performance was not. I was really surprised at how lackluster and unenthusiastic her performance was. And it wasn’t for a lack of choreography, staging or back-up dancers. There were plenty of those. It was as though she was just going through the motions to get it over with so she could get on the with after show party. The signature “POW!” that was so typical of her dance style was completely missing. It looked as if she thought if she moved too suddenly she’d fall over. I’ve seen better performances in high school plays. Not that a high school would ever make a play look like it was choreographed for a cheap strip club. Because that’s what this show looked like, stripper poles and all. Not that she’s ever been known for her modesty. But I would have thought she would have put more energy and effort into her come back performance. Overall, it was very disappointing.
Britney has had two kids since she was in the thick of her career last, and you can tell. Which is why it didn’t make sense that she’d be wearing little more than a bikini on stage. Don’t get me wrong, I understand what having kids does to a person’s body, and I don’t hold that against her. What I don’t understand is her choice of costume given that fact. There are so many things a person can wear that are sexy and that don’t show off every pound you’ve gained since your last pregnancy. I think she could have made a better choice in that regard.
The song itself, “Gimme More,” has a great beat, great over all tone and sounds like it’ll be a hit in the clubs. It has an almost hypnotic essence to it that’s addictive. I definitely liked it.
I wish her performance could have been up to par with the song and venue it was for. Overall, it came across as very amateur.
